Many of you have seen the video of the eloquent 19 year-old University of Iowa student who spoke in front of the Iowa state legislature a couple weeks back. If you haven't, it's worth watching. Check it out below.

Zach Wahls, who was raised by two mothers, speaks about his normal childhood and upbringing in a truly touching speech. This kid is a future lawmaker himself, if you ask me.

On the other end of the life experience spectrum, is Jean Argus. An 80 year-old native Iowan who speaks about her life in Iowa, her upbringing, and her role as mother to her gay son.

These two people: Proud Iowans, dedicated members of their family and community, and straight; share their personal stories and definition of family.

Uber-conservative Senator to appear at gay fundraiser

John Cornyn, the super socially conservative Senator from Texas has agreed to appear at a fundraiser for the Log Cabin Republicans. For those of you who don't know, the Log Cabin Republicans are a group of gay repubs who believe in many core Republican values.

Cornyn is a staunch supporter of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and has opposed same-sex marriage in his state. So, why is he going? He says "Some things we won’t agree on, but I think it’s always better to talk and then try find those things we can agree on rather than just assume there’s no common ground whatsoever.” True, but then he says that same-sex marriage is one thing they "absolutely" won't agree on, but he's happy to talk to them.

Now, here's my issue. WHY THE HELL ARE THERE STILL LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS?!?! I totally get believing in many of the fiscally conservative agendas put forth by the repubs. I do. I agree on many of them myself. But how can you still support a party that has made one of their main agendas disenfranchising you as a people?!?! This party, which once stood for smaller government, and personal responsibility, now uses the gay "movement" as a way to scare people into voting for them! Why would you still be a part of that group?!

It's like Meg Whitman. I agree with a LOT of what she has to say. To be honest, I think she is what this state needs to get back on track. Her welfare reform ideas, her proposed budget cuts, and her no-nonsense management style makes me think that she is our best shot at pulling this failing state out of the downward spiral we've been in for over a decade. But I REFUSE to cast a vote for someone who will work, and put my tax dollars to work, to ensure I do not have equal rights. That is just ridiculous. So, I'll plug my nose and cast a vote for Jerry Brown. Ugh. Point being, you can support ideas from both parties, but you have to look at yourself in the mirror and if you let your bank account take precedents over your identity, you are a sellout and pathetic. I think they should put mirrors in the ballot booths.

So have fun with the sad, pathetic group known as the Log Cabin Republicans, Senator Cornyn. Hmm, sad and pathetic...hey, you guys have THAT in common!

The Fatted Calf is coming to Hayes Valley

Meat lovers in Hayes Valley rejoice! A new French-style charcuterie is opening in our neighborhood!

Taylor Boetticher, who owns The Fatted Calf in Napa, has announced the opening of his newest shop at 320 Fell Street (between Gough and Octavia).

This new shop (which is directly behind me on the same block) will feature cured meats, bread, duck, chicken, salami, prosciutti, hot dogs, beer dogs, etc. Ready-to-eat items along with beer are also coming soon.

The shop, which I heard will keep it's wall-of-windows with delicious salamis and other meats on display, is slotted to open this Fall. Not soon enough!! Can't wait!!

Review: "In the Heights"

Tommy got us tickets for this show last week. I had no idea what it was about, where it was, whether it was a musical or play, nothing. Up to about ten minutes before, I still had no idea what it was or what to expect. All I knew at that point was that it was a musical since, while standing in line, I read the marquis "Tony Award winner - Best Musical" so I thought, eh...can't be that bad.

I was right. Not bad. Not bad at all. Very good actually. Great music, high energy, and talented performers. A great show!

It takes place in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York and follows the lives of the neighborhood families, who have grown over the years to become one large family.

I won't go into too many details but trust me, you will be entertained. It is playing at the Curran Theatre through June. Go see it!

Nite-nite: Gary Coleman 1968-2010

...and the Diff'rent Strokes curse continues. First, Dana Plato dies in a trailor in Vegas, now Arnold.

Gary Coleman, who played Arnold on Diff'rent Stokes in the 80's, died today in Utah at 42. He suffered a brain hemorrhage on Wednesday at his home.

His shortlived success, led to years of money and legal problems. It all started in 1989 when he sued his parents for inappropriately handling his money. He then filed bankruptcy in 1999. He's also been arrested for assault, disorderly conduct, and domestic violence.

The poor guy never really seemed to find happiness. At least now he's found peace.

So that's two of the three kids from Diff'rent Strokes. Todd Bridges, you should count your blessings.

...meanwhile Conrad Bain (who played Philip Drummond) is goin' strong at 87.

One of the things I enjoy about my morning commute (ok, the only thing I enjoy about my morning commute) is flipping between my 90's country and Rosie Radio on XM/Sirius satellite radio. Yes, Rosie Radio as in Rosie O'Donnell. Love her or hate her, she has a lot of thought provoking guests on her show.

This morning she had the makers of the documentary Food, Inc. It is a movie about the food industry, the governments involvement, and the damage we are doing to our bodies with the over processed meats and vegetables that we eat.

I haven't watched it yet. We plan to watch it tomorrow night (it's on Netflix Watch Instantly!) but I'm sure it will disturb me and make my already complicated relationship with food, pretty much impossible. Oh well.

New software

It occurred to me when watching some of the SeaWorld video from last month, that a lot of that could have been sliced up and put into one, much more interesting, video package. So, I decided to buy some video editing software. It's pretty cool. I have no idea what I'm doing but, my best friend, Christian says he can give me a tutorial.

This is my first attempt at using the software...I can use all the help I can get.

A new place to spend SF summer nights

For the last few months, we have been obsessed with frozen yogurt. It started when we were visiting the fam in LA. Although late to the game, we discovered the concept of self-serve yogurt and fell in love. Now that we're eating healthy, it is our reward for a good run, or an intense spin class.

We have found a few in the city that we like. TuttiMelon is really good. They have shops in the Marina, North Beach, SOMA, Sunset, and a few others I think. Most of them are self-serve, which is definitely a requirement for us. They all have anywhere from four to six flavors and an abundance of toppings.

This month, the Safeway shopping center at 16th and Potrero opened a new froyo shop: Nubi Yogurt. This is now the place to get froyo in the city (in my opinion). They have over fourteen flavors to choose from including cheesecake, several fruit flavors, and my favorite: Red Velvet Cake. They always have tons of fresh toppings and are situated right above 24 Hour fitness. How perfect is that? Now our reward is instant :)

So, if you are in the area, check them out. You might see Tommy and I shoveling a spoonful of Red Velvet Cake in our faces. Don't judge us, we earned it, remember? ;)

4 & 1/2 Rebas. They just need to add Cookies'N'Cream to their flavors and Pink&White animal cookies to their topping selections and they will earn the other half of Mrs. McEntire.

Review: Village California Bistro

Every year for my mom's birthday and Mother's Day, I try to find somewhere different to take her. Something other than our usual Chevy's, Elephant Bar, Stacks, etc that we go to through the year. For the past couple of years that I've been living in San Francisco, I've brought her up to SF since there are about four hundred more quality restaurants in the city vs the south bay.

This year, I decided to give San Jose another shot. Why make mom drive two hours on Mother's Day, right? Now, if you are used to San Francisco restaurants, bars, shops, etc and must eat and shop in San Jose, where is the one place you would go? Yup, Santana Row.

My first choice was to have brunch at Citrus, the restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Hotel Valencia (...which is actually the 1st floor? Weird) but they told me they weren't having any kind of brunch. They said we could order room service and sit outside with it if we wanted. What?? No.

So I called the Village California Bistro. They were fairly booked (I of course waited until the Monday before Mother's Day...in my defense I was on vacation) but were able to grant us a reservation for three (my mom, Tommy, and myself) at 2pm. A little later than I'd have liked, but ok.

We got there at about 1:45p and it was bustling. The entrance is a little awkward because you walk into the back of the host station. So, you are greeted by the backs of the host staff...strange. Anyway, they are no doubt used to this as they quickly turned around, greeted us, and asked if we had a reservation. We were concerned that there would be a delay since they had cleared some of the patio seating due to the weather (thanks "mother" nature) but we were seated right away.

Within one minute, our waiter appeared, greeted us, and wished my mother a happy Mother's Day. Points right off the bat. We wasted no time hitting the buffet. Anything and everything you could imagine. Pasta, breakfast items, seafood, dessert, everything! We filled our plates with such great items as chicken piccata, salmon, bacon, ham and cheese croissant sandwiches, oysters, prime rib...I could go on...but it's making me hungry. The food was delicious.

It has been my experience that we subconsciously lower our expectations when it comes to buffet food. For instance, Tommy and I just got back from a cruise. The food was good, not great, but good. We seem to cut the cooks some slack when they are cooking the same items for that many people. I have to say, each item that I tasted could have been presented as a menu item and I would have been thoroughly impressed. The quality was excellent.

We made quite a few trips back up to the buffet, and each time our dirty plates were cleared promptly. I had to ask for refills a couple of times but the staff was quick to return with one. The desserts were also delicious. A little more on the "mass produced" side than the main course items but that didn't stop me from shoving them in my face.

The buffet ended at 3pm and they started to casually, slowly, break things down a little early. They never made us feel rushed, but when I got up to get yet another desert, I heard them turning people away at 2:30pm.

The buffet was just under $40 per person. Not a bad price for a Mother's Day buffet and, when you consider the quality of food, it's a pretty good deal. What bugged me is that they charged us for coffee and soda. Soda, I understand a little more, but coffee?!?! You are going to charge nearly $40 and include oysters in your buffet but charge me $2 for coffee? That was a little petty in my opinion. It didn't tarnish the experience though. A good time had by all. Most importantly, my Ma.

A well deserved 4 Rebas for Village California Bistro. We just may add it to the Chevy's, Elephant Bar, Stacks rotation.

SeaWorld San Diego!

After our 5 day cruise to Mexico, we spent a few days in beatiful San Diego. We spent one full day at SeaWorld. I had never been! It's a great park. We went on a couple of fun rides and saw some fun shows.

Although I've never been to SeaWorld, I used to love going to the original Marine World Africa, USA in Redwood City (NOT to be confused with the new mega-amusement park in Vallejo). I always loved the Killer Whale and Dolphin show. Below are a couple of videos that Tommy took at the Killer Whale show. They are pretty amazing animals!

Another anti-gay "Christian" leader caught with gay hooker

Ok, it has been forever since I have written on here. I want to start doing it more regularly, because I enjoy it. Life just gets in the way. I even bought this silly little netbook so I could sit at SF coffee shops and blog the day away. I guess I forgot that A) I have a full time job, and B) I hate coffee. Anyway, I finally found a story that was just too good not to comment on.

Let's talk a little about George Rekers. That's his picture to the left. George is a far-right "Christian" minister who works with Focus on the Family leader, James Dobson. If you are not familiar with either of these men, count your blessings. They are two of the most prominent U.S. anti-gay leaders. Chances are, if you see a group of midwestern crazies holding "God Hates Fags" signs on the news or in a magazine, they are most likely at an event organized by Dobson or Rekers.

So, George Rekers went on a little vacation to Europe. On his way back, he was photographed in Miami with his vacation companion. Was it his wife? No. His son? No. It was a 20 year old male companion which he hired at...get this...Rentboy.com.

It's just too ironic for words. Well, more sad than ironic. The anti-gay champion who has written books on gay-to-straight conversion (yes, some believe there is a such thing) was caught with his gay 20 year old hooker. Now, Rekers denies anything inappropriate happened. He says that he hired the boy to carry his luggage since he had recently had surgery. (You'll see in the picture below, the rentboy is doing all the heavy lifting)

He now admits that he knew the boy was gay, but spent his time counseling the boy on the teachings of Christ. Uh huh. Yeah.

So, James Dobson, who was linked to ex-evangelical leader-turned gay hooker lover Ted Haggard and now George Rekers, has yet to be caught in a similar hypocritical tryst. Summer is coming though and rentboy is sure to get a new fleet of boys! Lock up your sons, America!

New Hayes Valley Art Installation

Every six months or so, Patricia's Green park, which is in the heart of Hayes Valley, installs a new art display in the center of the park. I look forward to it as I live down the street. The last art piece came out about a week ago and us locals waited eagerly to see what would fill the empty quad in the center of the park.

And here it is! I'm getting some mixed reactions from the people I know. Personally, I really like it. It's by far the grandest art installation we've ever had in Hayes Valley. It's unique, quirky, and fun. Just like Hayes Valley :) What do you think?

John Edwards finally mans-up

After years of secrets, infidelity, cheesy smiles, and flat-out lies, John Edwards has finally admitted that he fathered the daughter of his former videographer, Rielle Hunter. Man-of-the-year released a statement and said "I am Quinn's Father" after hearing that a former aide is about to release a tell-all book about Edwards and his failed Presidential campaigns.

In July, 2007 Edwards renewed his wedding vows with his wife of 30 years, Elizabeth; who has been battling incurable bone cancer since 2007. About eight months later, the child was born. Classy.

God Bless you Elizabeth Edwards. Your son dies, your husband cheats, and you have cancer. It's not fair but you handle it with such grace.

As for former Senator haircut, do us all a favor and step out of the public limelight. You have embarrassed your family and your party. I'm so over your lying interviews and speeches. I'd rather watch Jersey Shore than you on Oprah again. Even The Situation would probably make a better husband.

Cindy McCain "comes out" for marriage equality!

Cindy McCain, wife of John McCain contacted the folks at the NOH8 campaign and requested a photo shoot to show her opposition to Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California. The would-be first lady most likely heard about this from her daughter, Mehgan McCain, who is an avid gay rights activist...and yes....a Republican. You can be a Republican and not hate gay people. I know lots of them. Well, a few.

Anyway, what an awesome statement from the spouse of the leader of the Republican party!! Her husband does not share her opinion on gay marriage; at least not publicly. Either way, I think it says a lot about all of the McCains. Including Senator McCain. His wife has her own opinion and is free to speak it. He commented on Imus this morning that their conversations at home about the subject are "spirited". I bet. Although I'm not entirely convinced that personally, he's as against marriage equality as he says but I'll take his word for it.

Thank you, Cindy McCain for taking such a courageous stand on marriage equality!

Another uninvited guest gets into the White House?!?!

This is ridiculous. Is it just me? Am I the only one thoroughly disturbed at the fact that there has now been another person identified as getting into the same White House dinner that media-whores Tareq and Michaele Solahi go into?!

The secret service announced that a third unidentified person was able to get through security and attend the White House state dinner for India's prime minister. Apparently he arrived with members of the delegation but was not on the Secret Service's prescreened list of approved guests.

The Secret Service says that the man did not get near the President of First Lady. Really? How do they know? Oh, they must have checked the man's facebook.

The Secret Service director has said that the security breach was his agency's fault but the President was never at risk. Umm, how do you put the words: Secret-Service-Security-Breach-President-never-at-risk in one sentence?!

If I were President Obama, I'd be looking for a more thorough security detail...like Paul Blart mall cop.

Heated White House exchange

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs got into a heated discussion with April Ryan, of American Urban Radio yesterday. Ryan was questioning Gibbs about those stupid annoying party crashers and the role that the White House social secretary played at the party. He got annoyed and belittled her. She shot back.

He made a good point at the end, stating that they should get back to more important things, "like 98,000 men and women in Afghanistan" True, but I think they use the war as an excuse when they don't want to talk about a subject.

"How did those party crashers get into the White House?!"
"Why are we talking about this, there's a war going on!"

"Why is the President keeping Bernanke on?"

Campbell elects first gay, Asian-American mayor!

Yes, my sleepy little hometown, Campbell, California has elected a new mayor. The Campbell City Council elected Evan Low to be Campbell's newest mayor in a Tuesday night vote. He is 26, Asian-American, and gay.

Low grew up in San Jose, but moved to Campbell eight years ago. He ran for city council unsuccessfuly in 2004, but won a seat in 2006. He says he never considered moving to a larger, more gay friendly city such as San Francisco. "For me, it's about making a difference in the community I live in." he said in an interview "Campbell is my home".

He's taking a grass roots approach to increasing the tolerance level in this country. Don't get me wrong, it's great that we have Gavin "It's gonna happen, like it or not" Newsom in San Francisco, but IT'S SAN FRANCISCO. Although I appreciate his preaching to the choir, it's time to raise the awareness level in smaller towns such as Campbell. This is a small, quiet step in the right direction.

Congratulations Mr. Mayor!

Well, I've been away from blogging for too long. The last 90 days or so have been quite hectic with work, vacation, holidays, etc. Life is good, no complaints but I've held back my opinions for far too long. It's time to come back and give all of you (and by all of you, I mean my mom and the 4 other people who occasionally read this) my long overdue opinion. I feel like I've missed out on so much. So many things to discuss...

- Sarah Palin's new book (which I'm currently reading, review to follow)
- The Fort Hood tragedy
- The White House party crashers (someone put them and the Gosselin's on an island with no TV cameras PLEASE)
- Joy Behar's new show on HLN
- Holloween
- ....and the best show on TV, Modern Family

I won't try and catch up on all these topics, just move ahead as there are bound to be plenty more topics and train wrecks to discuss as we close out 2009.

I also changed the blog header pic. Used to be a black-and-white I took of the Golden Gate Bridge. I took this new one of our beautiful city skyline from Dolores Park at dusk. Please visit soon for more updates. In the meantime, here's one thing I've been up to:

Went to see the Christmas Tree lighting in Union Square on Friday. Mayor Newsom did the countdown. They have a lot in common, him and the tree. Both tall and majestic. Fortunately, I think this time only the tree was lit.

I have seen too many accidents, rude drivers, and now fights to use MUNI as my preferred form of transportation. I will take it on occasion, but only when absolutely necessary. Otherwise I will drive, cab it, or most preferably, scoot. Just my luck one of these crazy women will cut me off as I scoot down Market. Here's hoping they are permanent MUNI riders and not drivers!

President Clinton changes his view on gay marriage...for the better!

I have been a huge fan of President Clinton for many years. I had the privilege of meeting him once in 1997. (Have I mentioned that before? Probably. And I probably will again. It was a thrilling night!) I have a new reason to admire this great man and brilliant politician. He has changed his view and is "now personally" for same-sex marriage!

This is much different from his public stance on it when he was President. I also give him so much credit for admitting that he has changed his mind. So many politicians stick to outdated concepts because they don't want to seem like they are "flip-flopping" (thanks Karl Rove for that term) but President Clinton is a not afraid to say he has changed his mind.

I wish I could be alive 100 years from now to see how his legacy compares to that of his predecessor...what was his name again? Ahh, the memory (nightmare) is fading.

Thank you President Clinton. You continue to be an advocate for progress.

Boycott Manchester Hotels!

Doug Manchester, the owner of The Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel and The Grand del Mar Resort in San Diego donated $125,000 to anti-gay campaigners to help get Prop 8 on the ballot.(No, I did not add links to the hotels because A)We shouldn't be helping their website get hits and B) I don't want to tempt you...the hotels are actually quite beautiful)

Now, "Papa Doug" as he is known has reached out to some groups, offering to donate $125,000 to civil union groups. But, he is non-wavering in his opposition to same-sex marriage. Anti prop 8 groups are no less wavering as they have vowed a second year of boycotts and campaigns to increase boycotts on the Manchester hotels.

The boycott has so far cost Doug Manchester over $7 million dollars, and that's just for the Hyatt property! He has yet to apologize and refuses to meet with boycott leaders.

So, go ahead Mr. Manchester, donate another $125,000 when it comes up on the ballot again in 2010. $125K initial buy-in with a negative $7 million return? What a savvy investment.

PARK(ing) Day - Cute, but annoying

Living in San Francisco, I have learned to appreciate the precious 5'X15' real estate known as a parking space. I usually do not have too much trouble finding parking when I get home from work but should I come home a little early, or a little too late, I could drive around for a half hour trying to find a spot.

The group Rebar, a San Francisco art collective has started a program called PARK(ing) Day where these precious parking spaces are "leased" (about $300 in quarters dumped in over the course of the day) and used as small parks. This started in 2005 when it was discovered that 70% of downtown outdoor space is dedicated to vehicles and only a fraction of that to the public in the forms of such things as parks and open space.

So, tomorrow, Friday September 18th, you will have an even more difficult time parking in SF as these park people start rolling out sod on your much needed parking space. Don't get me wrong, I think it's noble to try and turn our downtown concrete jungle into a green eutopia but after circling the Moscone Center for an hour, my car just might end up as part of the 5'X15' art display.

Patrick Swayze lost his battle with cancer today. He was 57. I was going to write a whole bio about his life, but, who doesn't know all about Patrick Swayze? He was an awesome dancer, fantastic actor, and not a bad singer, either.

He was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2008. What an awful way to go. Wasting away. Cancer sucks.

Rest in Peace Patrick. No more pain.

Kelly Clarkson calls out Kanye better than anybody

I love Kelly Clarkson. Always have. Ever since her first audition on American Idol in Season One I wanted her to win. I followed her through the season, calling every week to vote for her. (I know, get a life) Then, when she went on to release albums, I was right there on opening day to get them...and they were awesome. Every one. I've seen her in concert a few times. Once, with Reba which obviously sealed the deal for me as a die-hard Kelly fan. Reba's husband, Narvel actually now manages Kelly.

Dear Kanye, What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we're all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like shit. I mean, I've seen you do some pretty shitty things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, asshole ways. It's absolutely fascinating how much I don't like you. I like everyone. I even like my asshole ex that cheated on me over you...which is pretty odd since I don't even personally know you. The best part of this evening is that you weren't even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a moon man that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really??

I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her...so why can't you be?? I'm not even mad at you for being an asshole...I just pity you because you're a sad human being.

On a side note, Beyonce has always been a class act and proved again tonight that she still is. Go TEXAS!!

Taylor Swift, you outsell him ....that's why he's bitter. You know I love your work! Keep it up girl!KC :)

Review: Little Ark Grooming Shop SF

My initial reaction was to give this place one Reba. The second Reba is what I call the "benefit of the doubt" Reba. The Little Ark Grooming Shop looks like it could be a nice place to take your pet but my experience was very much one star. I called Little Ark on a Sunday morning to see if I could get my dog, Jarvis' nails trimmed. He's 10 and does NOT like this process so I have to sit with him through it. I used to take him to the Petsmart in Daly City as I lived closer at the time. But since I now live in Hayes Valley, this is way more convenient.

So, I showed up at Little Ark at about 11am on Sunday. There was nobody in the lobby but there was a female employee in the back with all the dogs, she was trying to get to one of the kennels and yelled "move!" to a dog in her way. Now, I say that to Jarvis all the time when he's under my feet. But, he's MY DOG. I don't expect him to be yelled at like that at a groomery. Is that hypocritical? Oh well. Anyway, that was strike one.

So, she came to the front and said "can I help you?" I said "Yes, I'd like to get his nails trimmed" to which she quickly replied "Is he good through it?" I said "No" and before I even got to explain, she ROLLED HER EYES. Really? Strike two. Anyway, I finished my sentence after her dramatic eye roll "No, he doesn't like it and needs me to sit with him" She said "Ok, we'll do it right here then" She quickly pulled out the cutters, I got my dog comfortable on the floor with me and she went to work. She didn't say a word, just trimmed his nails. I guess I'm used to the girls at Petsmart who would reassure him while they cut his nails. That's fine though, I reassured him. No filing, no frills. Just cut and "That's it. Done" I said "Good boy! All done" to which he gleefully jumped up. This was apparently a bit much for her as he's tall and she turned her face away dramatically and said "Ok! Ok!" as in "get your big dog out of my face" Oh, I'm sorry. I thought this was a grooming shop. It's like hiring a nanny that holds your baby at arms length. You signed up for this, don't act you are sitting on my couch as a guest and my dog jumped in your lap. Strike three.

Bottom line, she is the reason for the low rating. I have a feeling this place probably has some very animal friendly staff. I mean, it's in the Duboce Triangle, right outside the Castro. Probably the most animal friendly neighborhood in SF. But, this girl? Uh-uh. Not animal friendly. I guess I'll continue to make the drive out to Daly City. Jarvis is 10 and deserves five star treatment. He doesn't deserve to be treated like a burden from someone in the wrong job with a one star personality.

Gertrude Baines, the oldest living person on the planet, died today at 115. She was born on April 6, 1894. Imagine living in the age we do now, with the internet, satellite, television, iphones, etc. and coming from an era where radio was still being introduced to the world. Where horsepower came from horses. What an amazing life.

This is the part that gets me: Her doctor does not know the exact cause of death but an autopsy is scheduled to be performed. Are you kidding me?!?! Umm, Dr. Witt (her physician), save your time and money. I'm going to announce the cause of death right here, right now...ready? SHE WAS ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. There. Please add to the death certificate.

By the way, according to the late Gerty Baines (I just gave her that nickname): "I never drank, never smoked, and never fooled around." Good for you Gerty. As for me, looks like I won't be making it to 115. Cheers!

Ben and Jerry's renames famous flavor in support of gay marriage

When you read the names Ben and Jerry, you are probably reading the packaging of ice cream. Unless, you live in the state of Vermont, where, as of today, you could be reading a same sex wedding invitation. Yes, effective September 1, 2009, gay marriage is officially legal in the state of Vermont and, to celebrate, Ben and Jerry's is changing the name of it's famous "Chubby Hubby" ice cream to "Hubby Hubby"! The newly (and temporarily) re-branded packaging will be available across the state of Vermont and will feature two grooms.

In a statement, a Ben and Jerry's rep said "In partnership with Freedom to Marry we are gathered here to celebrate Vermont and all the other great states where loving couples of all kinds are free to marry legally. We have ceremoniously dubbed our iconic flavor, Chubby Hubby to Hubby Hubby in support, and to raise awareness of the importance of marriage equality."

Way to go Ben and Jerry's! I just wish they offered the packaging here in California. Now there are two things that I can get in Vermont that I can't get here. Way cool gay friendly ice cream and treated equally. Some day.

Death calculator predicts when you might die

I know, not exactly a happy topic but pretty interesting. Researchers and students at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a calculator that can predict when you might receive your very own nite-nite.

The website, Deathriskratings.com will give you answers based on several questions. It compares mortality risks age, gender, and geographic region. For instance, the increased or decreased chance of death from cancer based on your location.

Nite-nite: Ted Kennedy 1932-2009

Not that this is news to anybody, but Senator Ted Kennedy passed away on Tuesday after a 15 month battle with a cancerous brain tumor. He was 77.

There is so much to say about this man, and so much has been already said. I had a conversation with a good friend last night who said "There are so few people in this world whose compassion and relentless strive for the betterment of the world was felt as keenly as him[Kennedy]" - so true. As we all do, he had his ups and downs through the years. The Chappaquiddick incident, the murder of his two brothers, his success in the Senate, illness...through it all, he never stopped pushing for progress and change and awareness and tolerance in America. It's what he felt was right.

The progressive movement has lost its greatest advocate. Who will now be the powerful voice of change? It's all on you, President Obama. Learn from the man whose backing of your candidacy helped put you in that Oval Office.

Rest in peace Senator Kennedy. Enjoy the time with your brothers that was cut so short.

Review: La Fayette Hotel - San Diego

We weren't sure what to expect when we booked our reservations online for the La Fayette Hotel. We didn't receive any recommendations for it. We didn't even research it on Yelp (which is odd now that I think about it) but we just went for it. Our requirements were inexpensive, and not a dump. After our night at the Alta Cienega Motel in West Hollywood, we decided it would be nice to stay somewhere that you didn't feel the need to wear thongs in the shower.

So, we were cautiously optimistic about the La Fayette. The pictures looked nice, but how could it be so cheap? A standard room was $69/night. What's the catch? We arrived late Monday night and discovered...there was no catch! It's just a nice hotel at a very reasonable price. Now, it's not some lavish five star resort. But, it's clean, the staff is friendly, it has a nice pool and nice rooms. When do you get all of those things for $69 a night?!

If you plan to visit San Diego and don't feel like shelling out $400 a night to stay at the Del but want a nice, safe place to rest your head. Check out the La Fayette.

If you haven't been to LA lately, this is what you are missing. Caught a pic of this former Mrs. Hollywood and Vine 1971. Ok, I know my mom is going to get mad at me for posting that. Sorry Ma. Well, I’ve been in LA for about 24 hours. We got in last night and checked in to our hotel and went out for a bit. Fun night. Our friend Matt came out with us. Then, this morning my friend Antonio picked me up and took me to TMZ, where he used to work. It was awesome, I got to meet all the people I watch on TV and check out how the operation works. Totally fascinating. Thank you again, Antonio. Love ya Lots.

Meghan McCain, E.D. Hill to guest co-host The View

Meghan McCain, the outspoken daughter of not-President John McCain, will join the panel of ladies on the View in September. She will be filling in for Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who is home with her latest conservative creation.

McCain was a supporter of her father but is also an outspoken supporter of the NOH8 Campaign and has spoken in favor of gay marriage. "I was so honored to be asked to pose for the NOH8 campaign. I am a proud member of the Republican Party and a proud supporter of marriage equality" Meghan said in an interview; "Marriage equality is not just a Democrat or Republican issue, it is a human one"

E.D. Hill is another story. This Ann Coulter wannabe used to spout her conservative vitriol on Fox News, but her Coulter-esque comments were even too much for Fox. She lost her show and left the network after commenting that President and Mrs. Obama's fist bump was a "terrorist fist jab". Yeah, she should be fun to watch with Joy.

Both women have been guest co-hosts in the past. I like Meghan McCain, I don't like E.D. Hill; but I'll watch both. The fireworks from these women make for good TV. I'm not as big a fan of the "kindler, gentler View". I miss the shouting matches between Hasselbeck and Rosie. Hey, maybe put Rosie on with E.D. Hill. We'll see how long it takes Rosie to climb over that oak table and strangle her.

Cher and Chaz! - Coming this fall

Roseanne Barr, or Roseanne Arnold, or just Roseanne, whatever her name is, is now producing an internet TV show called "Cher and Chaz" a docu-mockery about the life of Cher and her daugh...er...son(?) Chaz Bono. This is a 3 minute intro clip. I have two warnings. One, if you are at work, you might want to keep the volume down, the language is...well...is what you would expect in a Cher/Chaz Bono conversation. The second warning, it's not really funny. The theme song is the best part of it.

I'll put it to you, is it funny? Is it over the top? Is it crossing the line? Remember, Roseanne put this out. She crossed the line 25 years ago and hasn't stepped back behind it since. Which is why I like her.

Lombard Street turns into Candyland for sick kids

Hasbro, Inc. turned the famous crooked street, Lombard into a larger-than-life candyland board today to celebrate the board game's 60th anniversary.

Patients from UCSF's Children's Hospital dressed up as colored game pieces and played on the "board game" which was roughly 30,000 times the size of the regular game.

Lombard was closed for the day today, but the residence didn't seem to mind as they watched on from their front porches. One of those random, fun, only-in-San-Francisco events.

Baby Stewie OUTED!

Seth MacFarlane, the creater of Family Guy has officially announced that Stewie Griffin is gay! "We had an episode that went all the way to the script phase in which Stewie does come out," MacFarlane said in the September issue of Playboy. "It had to do with the harassment he took from other kids at school. He ends up going back in time to prevent a passage in Leviticus from being written: 'Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind. It is an abomination.' "

It will be interesting to see how they handle this subject in the coming season; if they do at all. Perhaps they can broach the subject with Karl Rove or Rush Limbaugh, both of which are scheduled to appear in the '09/'10 season.

Family Guy is the first animated show in history to be nominated for a "Best Comedy" Emmy.

Funny Presidential Town Hall protester signs

We've all seen some of these crazed protesters, like the one I blogged about last week. He's the extreme. Some are silly, some are funny, and some are just plain dumb. Here are a few of the signs from recent weeks.

At least the guy in the back left is honest. "Angry Mob" haha.

The one sign in the middle pretty much sums up the rest of them. I mean, look at the guy with the confederate flag tshirt and the "Abolish Federal Government" sign.

This might be my favorite sign, definitely an issue I'd like to see go before the Supreme Court. I hope Sotomayor has a dry sense of humor.

I don't know what I like more about this guy, the fact that he came out to poke fun at the protesters, or that he's just strolling through the angry crowd on his cell phone.

Ahh, our well informed youth. These girls are trying to keep young Chinese people from killing your Grandma. It's an epidemic.

I know most of you could care less about this, but as a lot of you know I've been a crazy Reba FANatic for about 20 years. Geez, I'm getting old. It all started when I used to go to Los Banos to spend the weekend with my friend Jason when we were in the 8th grade and his mom, Michele would play Reba the whole way.

20 years, about 16 concerts, and one very exciting meet-and-greet later, I'm as big a fan as ever. She still sounds and looks amazing. I can't wait to pick up the new CD. (Headed to Target after my 10am meeting). I'll let y'all (ha) know how it is! Should I rate it? Do I use Rebas to rate Reba? That seems inappropriate. You know I'd just give it 5 anyway. :)

Brad Pitt joined Bill Maher recently. The two discussed acting, Hollywood, politics, and their mutual hobby...rolling joints. Well, Brad stopped once he had kids but Bill's still an herbal fan.

Dancing with the Stars cast announced

Kelly Osbourne and Melissa Joan Hart will join 14 other competitors on this season's DWTS. I used to hate this show and somehow now I'm sucked in. It must be the witty banter and sexual tension between Tom Bergeron and Bruno Tonioli. The show used to be somewhat of a joke because of their consistent D-list cast; but in recent seasons they have stepped up the calibur of contestents. They threw in a few B and C listers, which they have done again this year. Still, a healthy amount of D listers. My fave contestent this year is Tom DeLay. The ultra-conservative Repub from Congress who resigned after getting indicted for campaign finance issues.

Other contestents include Debi Mazar, Entourage actress and friend of Madonna who posed for NoH8. Macy Gray, Kathy Ireland, Mya, and some sports people. Oh, and the son of George Hamilton and Alana Stewart. Yeah, like I said, healthy dose of D's this year. It will be fun to watch Kelly Osbourne and Debi Mazar though, love them.

Tom DeLay will be entertaining too. Oh, I almost forgot Donny Osmond. I'm sure Marie will be right there in the audience every week. Maybe he'll faint too. Did wonders for their ratings and got her the Jenny Craig gig.

Plane/Helicopter crash in NY caught on tape!

An Italian tourist, who was still learning to work his new video camera, caught on tape the helicopter/plane collision over the Hudson River earlier this week. Nine people were killed in the crash. Supposedly, the air traffic controller was on a personal phone call during the crash and the tower supervisor who was supposed to be in the tower, wasn't. They are not charged with anything at the moment and there is no evidence that this lead to the crash but both were suspended without pay.

The video, though choppy footage, is still tough to watch.

Hey, crazy. Stay away from my President please

So this Lee-Harvey-esque nutjob shows up at a Presidential event carrying a sign that says "The tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants". Fine, protesters are allowed to march and say their peace. One of the greatest Constitutional rights in this country is the freedom of speech. No argument there. The problem is, he showed up with a gun strapped to his leg. Ummm, anyone else see a problem with this?

I'm not only a first amendment proponent, I'm very much a fan of the second amendment. I enjoy shooting guns, have no problem with them, and value the right that I have to walk into a store and purchase one. Having said that, there is a time and a place and a PRESIDENTIAL EVENT IS NOT ONE OF THEM!!!

This crazy was on Hardball with Chris Matthews yesterday. (Whom I'm a huge fan of. He's by far my favorite journalist on television). Nutty's argument is that he was trying to make a statement about the many rights in this country that he feels are being stripped away.

The former governor of Alaska, Mayor Mooseburger as I so lovingly call her, is spouting off yet again about health care and how under President Obama's plan, advisors will walk into nursing homes and put down any old person who's medicine costs more than $4.75 a day. Ok, so that's not exactly what she's saying but it's close. The "death panels" she refers to are supposed groups who will decide who gets and who is denied health care. Please, do people really believe this?

My favorite part of this whole thing is that now that Mayor M doesn't have the gubernetorial podium to stand on (which I believe consists of two salmon crates tied together with twine), she must now give her two cents through a slightly less grandiose platform...Facebook status updates. She went from having a press secretary issuing press releases, to broadcasting her views from her sectional sofa and iBook through status updates and Tweets. (Which, incidentally, I asked her if she would no longer be using the Twitter handle AKGovSarahPalin...she has yet to respond to me).

Who thinks they can influence people through silly social media sites like Facebook or Twitter?! Oh...wait...oops. Hey, if you are reading this you fell for it! :)

Nite-nite: Eunice Kennedy Shriver 1921-2009

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of JFK who helped found the Special Olympics, died today at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston at 88. Shriver is the mother of five children, most notable first lady of California, Maria Shriver. Her husband, Sargent Shriver is 93 and was the Democratic nominee for Vice-President in 1972.

Shriver spent several decades as an advocate for children with mental disabilities. Her work creating the Special Olympics among other projects, led to her receiving the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Reagan in 1984.

Her husband, five children, and nineteen grandchildren were at her side. A true advocate for children and acceptance. Rest in Peace.

Kathy Griffin and Sarah Palin at Thanksgiving?!?

Sounds crazy, right? Well, since Kathy Griffin showed up at the Teen Choice Awards with Sarah Palin's grandbaby's daddy, Levi Johnston, anything is possible. Now, it's obviously a publicity stunt, and a damn good one, but I'm sure it has Sarah and Bristol P seeing red. I could make a joke here about "...and I don't mean the fake crimson that they pump into Kathy's hair" but I like her too much :)

Now, look at this poor kid. He looks scared to death. Does he have any other look? He had that same moose-in-the-headlights look standing on stage at the Repub Convention with his pregnant Palin. It's that "oh sh&t, what did I get myself into?!" look. Here's a suggestion Levi, STOP GETTING YOURSELF INTO SH&T! You think this is going to make it easier for you to spend time with that baby? I mean, come on. Michael Jackson's pharmacist makes better judgement calls (sorry, still in "Roast" mode).

Anyway, this had to piss off the Palin's and that's good enough for me :) Love Kathy Griffin. If the rumor's about the Palin marriage are true, Kathy just might show up at the Emmy's with Todd!

That was my own joke to roast Joan Rivers. Not bad, huh? What do you want from me, I'm not a comedian. Neither were half of the roasters! Bah-dum-bum.

Kathy Griffin hosted the Roast of Joan Rivers on Comedy Central. It was hilarious. A lot of jokes about old people, plastic surgery, and ....well, that's pretty much what every joke was about, told in many funny ways by many funny people. Here's a small sampling from Jeff Ross. The Senate has just confirmed Sonia Sotomayor as the first hispanic Supreme Court Justice in a 68-31 vote. This is President Obama's first Supreme Court appointment and is seen as a win for progressives and hispanics alike.

Democrats praised her saying she brings a moderate voice to the bench while the Repubs say she will come to the court with a liberal agenda. She replaces David Souter, a liberal who was appointed by George H.W. Bush, ironically enough.

Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed as the 111th Supreme Court Justice, the first hispanic, and only the third female. (Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are the other two). She is of Puerto Rican decent and was born in the Bronx. She graduated from Princenton University Summa Cum Laude in 1976 and went on to gradulate Yale Law School in 1979. Wow, quite a ways from 180th street and the D train.

She worked in private practice and was an assistant disctrict attorney until George H.W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. Court for the Southern District of New York in 1991. President Clinton nominated her to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1997 and she was eventually confirmed in 1998 (Confirmation slowed due to the Repub majority in the senate)

Apparently, Twitter has been down for most of the morning due to a hacker attack. Twitter was "defending against a denial-of-service attack" and the site is still not fully up and functional. The outage also affected Facebook which was experiencing problems today too.

One woman in Manhattan was interviewed and said she felt "completely lost" without her Twitter today. Really? Relax lady. I'm curious to know how Perez Hilton's trip to Tokyo is and what Ashton Kutcher's bitching about today too but I'll survive.

I just tried to log in again and it took about three minutes but finally came up. I'm in! Oh, and Khloe Kardashian is at Starbucks. Thank God it's back. What would I have done without that information.

Restaurant review: SPQR

Tommy and I had dinner at the small Italian restaurant SPQR. This Roman inspired osteria in the Fillmore district was recommended by friends. We arrived at about 8pm and the place was bustling. There are maybe 20 tables with just enough room to squeeze by in between to make your way to one of the two counters. One counter overlooks the kitchen, which is the more desirable and busier counter. The other overlooks the wine cabinets, which is where we sat. (It looked like a 20 minute wait or so had we wanted a table) Our waitress Emily greeted us within two minutes and asked about our beverage selection. Tommy ordered wine, I ordered diet soda. Emily brought me a "Cricket Cola", which is a green tea natural cola. It was quite tasty but I would have liked to have been warned that I wasn't getting a Coke or Pepsi. Anyway, it worked out. I'm now a fan of Cricket Cola.

We ended up ordering their three antipasti deal and splitting one entree. We ordered fresh ricotta, summer squash, toasted pinenuts, and crostini bread. Followed by pork sausage, then corn fritters with pancetta. All delicious. Each were small portions but they were so rich they were just enough. This was followed by our main course, Rigatoni Carbonara with pork and pecorino. Delicious! A rather small portion to split, but again so rich that we couldn't eat another bite.

Emily was awesome, she knew everything there was to know about Tommy's wine selection. Even the details of the winery and the region in Italy where it comes from! Great service, a busy, but comfortable atmosphere, and rich flavorful food.

I've decided to come up with a rating system for movies, restaurants, etc. Since I am a HUGE Reba fan, I'm going to make my rating Rebas. So, here goes my first rating. I give SPQR.....

What else can you say about President Clinton? The man is still the most powerful man in the world in my opinion. You all know I'm a huge fan of President Obama, but Bill Clinton is a force. You think George W. Bush could have flown to North Korea and recued those journlaists? No way. I don't even know that President Obama has that kind of influence (yet). President Bill Clinton is probably the most respected man in the world. He deserves to be.

The video below is really touching. They had no idea where they were going, they were prisoners. Then, they walk into a room and see President Bill Clinton. What an awesome feeling and tremendous relief. Talk about a sight for sore eyes!

My only question is, I wonder how Secretary of State Hillary Clinton felt about that? Isn't that her territory? Well, to her credit, she stepped aside and let him take the lead...again.

Yes, 48 years ago today Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. I know it's hard for many to believe, but this fact has been proven again, and again,...and again.

So, 48th, 44. Let's hope the Senate gives you the birthday gift of 2 billion more for Cash for Clunkers. That program is helping our economy and our environment!

SUV becomes the meat in a MUNI sandwich

Last night I was on my way to the grocery store when I saw a bit of "commotion" coming from Market street. I parked at Safeway and walked up Market street about three blocks to find yet another MUNI accident. This one was quite interesting. A Nissan Pathfinder SUV was sandwiched between two MUNI F-line trains. I snapped these pictures at about 7pm.

The accident happened near the corner of Market and Noe. According to riders of the F, the driver was distracted while talking to a passenger. Luckily, no one was seriously injured.

This is the second major MUNI accident in less than a month! I'm so glad I don't ride the MUNI to work! (Cause driving 120 miles a day at 80mph is so much safer)

Last week I wrote about a potential threat to the iPhone in the form of an SMS message which hackers could remotely take over your iPhone.

Apple has since released a patch that can protect your phone from such a virus. The patch cannot be downloaded directly to your iPhone. It must first be downloaded to your iTunes, then loaded onto the iPhone during the syncing process.

Simply download the iPhone OS 3.0.1 update to your iTunes and sync your iPhone and you're protected!

The downside to city living

Last week, my car was broken into. Nothing stolen, just some punk kids or a homeless person decided to bash in my passenger window. This morning, my best friend Kim's car was broken into. They broke the window, stole her car stereo, ipod, GPS, and over $300 in makeup.

I talk a lot about how great it is to live in SF. The culture, the divirsity, the nightlife, the weather, the restaurants...but there is a downside. I don't know who broke into Kim's car or mine, but you have to be pretty desparate to resort to that. The amount of homeless and people living below the poverty line in SF is ridic. Whenever you have that, you have stupid crimes like these. And no, I don't live in a bad neighborhood. I live in a quite good neighborhood but no neighborhood in SF is immune to this happening. You could walk through Pac Heights and see shattered window glass on the sidewalk.

The moral of the story is, if you have valuables in your car, hide them. Even if you don't see them as valuable, someone else might. Keep your seats and floor clean of any visible items. Don't give them an excuse to break in.

Sorry, Kim. A lousy couple of days.

It's been 5 whole days since civilian Sarah Palin left her post as Governor of Alaska and since then, her fans and supporters have been walking around like zombies bumping into walls not knowing what to do without her stoic leadership. Obviously, I'm being dramatic... her leadership wasn't that stoic. So, all these Palin-ites are pleading with her through Facebook and Twitter to give them some sign that she hasn't dropped off the Earth. (They think it was formed 2000 years ago and is flat, you know). But, not a peep from Mayor Mooseburger. What? Nobody has seen her? How can this be? I'd hardly think she could go anywhere without getting recognized. You mean, she hasn't been spotted in Alaska?! TMZ hasn't caught her trying to leave Wasilla Hardware? The valet at the Anchorage Applebees didn't snap an iphone pic and load it on his blog?

Yes, as shocking as it is, Palin has gone dark...for now. Rest assured Palin-ites, she will rise up again with a new determination to take over the world. 2012? Maybe. I think she's looking for the money more than the power now, so I expect her to go on a 50 city book tour any day now. Oh, well she has to write a book first. Maybe that's what she's doing. I also wouldn't be surprised if we see her as the guest co-host on The View when Elisabeth Hasslebeck pops out baby number 7 or whatever this one is.

Gone for good? No way Jose (the name she uses for anyone with darker skin than Alaskans...like Oregonians) Back in the spotlight in a matter of weeks? You betcha.

Harvey Milk to receive posthumous award: Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Barack Obama will award 16 people with the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom on August 12th. Among those, 14 are living including Ret. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy, and Billy Jean King (who lives in my friend's building in NYC...I have yet to experience a BJK sighting on my visits). There are two posthumous awards being given. In otherwords, two dead people are getting medals. Congressman and Vice-Presidential candidate Jack Kemp, and GLBT rights pioneer, activist, and hero, Harvey Milk.

Also on the list are other actors, politicians and community leaders. A proud day for all those that fight for equal rights as two pioneers, Billy Jean King, who faught for gender equality, and Harvey Milk, who fought to his death for equal rights for gays and lesbians, will be recognized with this high honor.

President Obama hopes to end negative press with "a cold one"

Well, now that we actually have a President who can have a beer without having it considered "falling off the wagon", President Obama plans to use an age old common bond of men to smooth over tense feelings....booze. The President plans to reach out this afternoon to Harvard Professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr, and Cambridge police officer, James Crowley.

If you don't know the story, here's the rundown, Crowley shows up at Gates home investigating a burglary and arrests Gates, even though Gates has proven he is in his own home. The racial tension heated even more when President Obama made a statement that Gates acted "stupidly" and in the same statement said he didn't have all the facts. Ok, you can have one or the other. You can say he acted stupidly but you better have the facts straight. Or, you can say you don't have the facts and not comment, especially in such a damning way to the officer and Cambridge police.

The story did not do him any favors in the news. A Pew Research poll shows that 41% disapprove of how President Obama handled the issue, while only 29% approved.

Well, the three are meeting in the Rose Garden of the White House for a beer this afternoon. Will this symbolic meeting put an end to racial tension in America? Probably not. Will it put an end to a negative story that has been hanging over the President all week? Probably. I think that will be good enough for this administration. One step (and beer) at a time...

iPhone users beware! Virus could be released today

In a matter of hours, at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, a demonstration will be given on how to take control of an iphone remotely through a specially constructed SMS message. The fear is, that once explained publicly at the conference, anyone with sitting in the audience with an iphone and a bad attitude, could start releasing this virus. The virus could spread quickly through the iphone community which could cause mass hysteria since lately it seems there are more people with iphones than with jobs.

There is a way to identify these "virus texts"; look for a small square character in your SMS messages. c If you discover this, turn your iphone off immediately and leave it off for a couple hours. I realize to you iphone users this sounds like "just hold your breath for two hours" but you will survive, trust me (says the bitter blackberry user).

Apple has yet to release a patch for this but if they do, I will post a link. In the meantime tweet, poke, and ping with caution.

NoH8 photo shoot a success!

Tommy and I attended the NoH8 photo shoot today at the W Hotel. It was so great to be part of this campaign. I can't wait to see how our photos turned out. We were able to take not only individual shots but shots together. As soon as they send them to us, I will post them.

There are no further photo shoots planned but I will update you should they add more dates.

Today, from 11am-6pm the NOH8 campaign will be in San Francisco at the W Hotel to do their Northern California photo shoot. This is a grassroots movement to maintain focus on the injustice of Prop 8 which stripped gays and lesbians of their right to marry in California. There will most likely be a proposition on the 2010 ballot and NOH8 is seeking celebrity endorsers to continue champion their (our) cause.

If you happen to be in or around San Francisco this afternoon, stop into the W Hotel and be part of a just and worthwhile cause.

News flash: The President is American

UGH! Enough with this stupid speculation!! Hawaii again confirmed that President Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural born citizen, therefore Constitutionally qualified to hold the Office of President. In a statement made today, Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said "I ... have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawaii State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen, I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago."

Really neo-cons? That is the straw you are grasping? Far-right repubs are still trying to prove that President Obama was not born in the U.S. What do they expect to accomplish by doing this? "See, he's born in Africa, that means Sarah Palin should be President" Is that their logic? There are two pieces of paper I'd like to hand to these close-minded sore losers. First, is his birth certificate from Hawaii. Second, is the Constitution that not only shows the requirements to hold the Office of President, but also shows the Order of Succession. Duh repubs, if you prove he's not eligible, you don't get to pick who you want. You'd get President Biden. Happy now? I think not.

So, I find myself spending more and more time on twitter. It is the social networking site of 2009. (Facebook is soooo 2008 and if you're still on Myspace...well, I just feel sorry for you). Twit takes some getting used to. The whole "tweet" and "retweet" (RT) thing is a little odd at first I will admit. I think people try it out for a week or so because they hear the hype, and then cancel. Believe the hype! It is an awesome site that, if you give it enough time, will be your social networking site of choice.

I've never seen a company grow at such an amazing rate. Twitter was only founded in 2006. 2006! It is now one of the 50 most used websites worldwide and the third largest social networking site (I guarantee soon to be second). They have a monthly growth rate of 1,382% but only retain 40% of their users. Which brings me back to my first point. Try it for more than a week! Ok, I'll stop yelling.

Sotomayor on her way to being first Hispanic Supe Court Justice

The Senate Judiciary Committee just approved Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court, which would make her the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice in our nation's 233 year history. Soon-to-be Supe Justice Sotomayor was approved in a 13-6 vote today with one Repub siding with the Dems to approve. Senator Lindsay Graham of South Carolina had a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" attitude today when he voted to approve Sotomayor. The next step is the confirmation vote next week. An exciting time for the Hispanic and progressive community!

Ok, so that's a STUPID headline but I couldn't think of anything. I haven't had a chance to experience this for myself yet but if I can get down there this week, I'd like to see it first hand. There is a blackbird near California and Sacramento streets here in the city that is swooping down and attacking pedestrians walking by. It has drawn national media attention. Jack Donaghy's take on same sex marriage

Ok, well maybe not fictional conservative character Jack Donaghy, but real life liberal Alec Baldwin makes a great argument.

I don't know what the best perspective is on the gay marriage issue. I don't know what to say to people to convince them that the issue of individual rights alone is enough to grant gay couples the right to marry. We live in a time when the idea of individual rights has been relegated to a quaint afterthought during the realignment of American values resulting from the current brawl between capitalism and democracy.

One perspective, however, keeps coming back at me. Fundamentalists believe that marriage is between a man and a woman and for the purpose of creating a family. A gay couple is incapable of having their own children, they assert, so they do not qualify to be married. But what of heterosexual couples who marry with no intention of having children. Beyond any issues of infertility or illness, there are men and women who are married in the eyes of the state, enjoying all of the legal benefits, who have no intention of having children. They seek only companionship and all of the entitlements that come with marriage. Sex, joy, partnership, caring. All of that is theirs, even though they will never bear children and willfully so. If the state says they are free to do that, why aren't gay couples, as well.

This country denies gay couples that right only by asserting that gay Americans do not have the exact same rights as those deliberately childless straight couples. And that is to say that homosexuality itself is illegal. Opponents would have to say that they do not want gay couples to enjoy the same lifestyle as straight couples who refuse to have children because gay Americans are not entitled to have the sex, joy, partnership and caring that their straight counterparts have. They would, therefore, have to outlaw homosexuality itself. Either that or outlaw every single marriage wherein that couple refuses to raise a family. One or the other. That's it. No other choice.

Do you think this society is prepared to outlaw homosexuality? Even with all the fear and hatred of homosexuals that some groups promulgate today? Think about that. Think about the effort and cost involved to argue that case. To write and manifest those laws. To prosecute them and punish the "transgressors." Will our society similarly outlaw childless heterosexual marriage? Of course not. That is ridiculous in the extreme. Ridiculous and wrong.

Once you embrace this basic idea, the rest of the argument falls into place. Gay couples are free not only to marry, but to create families in every way that heterosexual couples who cannot bear their own children do. Adoption, surrogacy, etc.

One does not have to possess one molecule of identification with the gay cultural or political experience in this country to believe that gay Americans have the right to marry. Such a stance is not similar to saying, "I always wanted to play the piano so I favor government scholarships for music study." You do not need to have one ounce of affinity for gay people in our society whatsoever to recognize that they are being shamefully wronged every day we allow this to continue.

Fired soldier pleads with Obama and congress to change outdated policy

The following is a letter addressed to President Obama and congress from Lt. Daniel Choi who was discharged from the military after revealing his homosexuality. He is a graduate of West Point and a founding member of "Knights Out", an organization for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender West Point Alumni.

Open Letter to President Obama and Every Member of Congress:

I have learned many lessons in the ten years since I first raised my right hand at the United States Military Academy at West Point and committed to fighting for my country. The lessons of courage, integrity, honesty and selfless service are some of the most important.

At West Point, I recited the Cadet Prayer every Sunday. It taught us to “choose the harder right over the easier wrong” and to “never be content with a half truth when the whole can be won.” The Cadet Honor Code demanded truthfulness and honesty. It imposed a zero-tolerance policy against deception, or hiding behind comfort.

Following the Honor Code never bowed to comfortable timing or popularity. Honor and integrity are 24-hour values. That is why I refuse to lie about my identity.

I have personally served for a decade under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: an immoral law and policy that forces American soldiers to deceive and lie about their sexual orientation. Worse, it forces others to tolerate deception and lying. These values are completely opposed to anything I learned at West Point. Deception and lies poison a unit and cripple a fighting force.

As an infantry officer, an Iraq combat veteran and a West Point graduate with a degree in Arabic, I refuse to lie to my commanders. I refuse to lie to my peers. I refuse to lie to my subordinates. I demand honesty and courage from my soldiers. They should demand the same from me.

I am committed to applying the leadership lessons I learned at West Point. With 60 other LGBT West Point graduates, I helped form our organization, Knights Out, to fight for the repeal of this discriminatory law and educate cadets and soldiers after the repeal occurs. When I receive emails from deployed soldiers and veterans who feel isolated, alone, and even suicidal because the torment of rejection and discrimination, I remember my leadership training: soldiers cannot feel alone, especially in combat. Leaders must reach out. They can never diminish the fighting spirit of a soldier by tolerating discrimination and isolation. Leaders respect the honor of service. Respecting each soldier’s service is my personal promise.

The Department of the Army sent a letter discharging me on April 23rd. I will not lie to you; the letter is a slap in the face. It is a slap in the face to me. It is a slap in the face to my soldiers, peers and leaders who have demonstrated that an infantry unit can be professional enough to accept diversity, to accept capable leaders, to accept skilled soldiers.

My subordinates know I’m gay. They don’t care. They are professional.

Further, they are respectable infantrymen who work as a team. Many told me that they respect me even more because I trusted them enough to let them know the truth. Trust is the foundation of unit cohesion.

After I publicly announced that I am gay, I reported for training and led rifle marksmanship. I ordered hundreds of soldiers to fire live rounds and qualify on their weapons. I qualified on my own weapon. I showered after training and slept in an open bay with 40 other infantrymen. I cannot understand the claim that I “negatively affected good order and discipline in the New York Army National Guard.” I refuse to accept this statement as true.

As an infantry officer, I am not accustomed to begging. But I beg you today: Do not fire me. Do not fire me because my soldiers are more than a unit or a fighting force – we are a family and we support each other. We should not learn that honesty and courage leads to punishment and insult. Their professionalism should not be rewarded with losing their leader. I understand if you must fire me, but please do not discredit and insult my soldiers for their professionalism.

When I was commissioned I was told that I serve at the pleasure of the President. I hope I have not displeased anyone by my honesty. I love my job. I want to deploy and continue to serve with the unit I respect and admire. I want to continue to serve our country because of everything it stands for.

Please do not wait to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Please do not fire me.

Elisabeth H sitting a little less comfortably to the right on "The View"

I like Elisabeth Hasselbeck. I have for a long time. I have said before on this blog that, although I agree with little that she says, I admire her for standing up and saying it. She has her beliefs and she is proud of them but she never tries to disregard anyone elses. She has admittedly broadened her "View" (pardon the pun) and opened her mind in recent years. This is an excellent example of that.

Remember that douchebag "Joe the Plumber" who's name isn't Joe and isn't even a plumber? Yeah, the bald guy that looks like he keeps a chew spit cup wedged between his 1984 Chevy Silverado bench seat and truck door. You know the one, with the gun rack on the back and the "W" sticker hastily stuck over the "Dole/Kemp 96" sticker. Well, he opened his mouth (which probably reaks of Copenhagen and Coors Light) to the "news" paper "Christianity Today" and lovingly referred to gays as queers and spoke about how he would never let his children near them.

The little Conservative powerhouse Elisabeth spoke up against him on the View today and said that as a repub, she wants no part of him. Good for you Elisabeth! (Since it's spelled with an 'S', can we say good job Lis?...anyway) I can't believe this guy's 15 minutes are still going strong. He played such an intregal part in the demise of the McCain/Palin campaign, you would think the repubs would have cast him aside and disowned him like the gay son they (think they) never had. Maybe him and Ms. Loser U.S.A. should get together and ride that Silverado into the sunset together. Careful Miss Cal, don't get your veil caught in the gunrack.

Maine becomes 5th state to allow same sex marriage

In a 21-13 vote, the Maine Senate voted to pass a same sex marriage law, becoming the 5th state in the Union to allow gay couples to marry. Governor John Baldacci, a democrat, had not indicated whether or not he would sign such a bill if presented with it but, today, he did. The governor had opposed gay marriage in the past but supported civil unions. So did the rest of the country, but things are changing. Way to go Governor Baldacci!!

New Hampshire has a same sex marriage bill on their Senate floor right now. Stay tuned. We may be announcing a sixth state!

If you haven't heard of this documentary, you will. It is getting quite the buzz. Not only does it discuss the very contraversial subject of homosexuality in politics, but it NAMES NAMES. Yes, rumored homosexual politicians are "outed" in this documentary...and guess what, they aren't the liberal "homo-loving" lions like Gavin Newsom and David Patterson, they are the hypocritical "anti-gay" conservatives of Washington. Nite-nite: Jack Kemp 1935-2009

Jack Kemp, the 1996 Republican VP candidate alongside Bob Dole, died Saturday after a relatively short battle with Cancer. Kemp was a fiscal conservative but took both right and left views on social subjects. He was an avid apponent to Roe v. Wade and abortion but took a more liberal stance on immigration and immigrants rights.

Kemp also enjoyed a level of success as an NFL quarterback for the Detroit Lions. Then, he joined the taxi squads of the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers.

California's "top cop" gets his tires jacked

Jerry Brown, the Attorney General for California came home from the California State Democratic Convention to find his Government-issued Toyota Camry Hybrid on blocks Thursday. The AG, who is also the states former (and possible future) governor had his two passenger-side tires stolen right in front of his Oakland Hills home.

The former Oakland mayor and former Democratic Party Chair (geez, how many jobs has this guy had?!) had a good sense of humor about it. On his facebook page he wrote "Even though I am California's 'top cop,' 2 of my tires were stolen. No matter. I got 2 new ones and I'm rolling again!"

Has anyone asked about the whereabouts of Gavin Newsom that night? ;)

Steamed Rice

An intern asked some tough questions of Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice at Stanford University about Abu Ghraib prison, Guantanamo Bay, and torture. I originally titled this article "Condescending Rice" because the clip I saw on TV showed her getting attitude with the intern and making comments such as "do your homework" and "no dear, you're wrong" but after watching the video in its entirety, I see that Secretary Rice was both patient and courteous to the students. Even to the point where an aide tries to get Secretary Rice out of the situation, she says "no, let him finish". An interesting, candid view of her in my opinion. What do you all think?
